I know that you share my outrage at the corruption, cronyism and incompetence that is dragging our great state down. However, it is not enough to just get mad about this mess. It is time to start cleaning it up. There are so many issues that need addressing. Here are a few that I think are priorities:
Education"[U]nless a people are educated and enlightened it is idle to expect the continuance of civil liberty, or a capability for self-government."  (Texas Dec. of Ind.) "Tuition deregulation” (link to charts showing UT system increases)
has placed a college education outside the reach of the typical working Texas family. We should not be satisfied with minimum standards that require teaching to the test.  The current school funding "fix"  places our schools in crisis.  I believe public schools are an essential component of a democracy. We must restore funding to our schools and invest in the future of this state.  Privatization, which my opponent supports, is not the answer. Tell me your education story...

Transportation—District 29 faces increasing transportation gridlock.  We must develop mobility solutions that allow the economy to continue to prosper while taking proper care of this great state.  The current crowd in Austin seems unwilling to invest in our  transportation and transit infrastructure.  (click to read a report about our "crumbling infrastructure").  I oppose the Trans-Texas Corridor which uses public money to build a private road and will support legislation to stop this project.   What do you think will help our transportation blues?

Health Care—Health care costs are weighing down business growth. Health care costs are also a leading factor in personal bankruptcies. The economic security of our nation depends on resolving this issue. Tell me your Health Care story...

Taxation—It’s time to end the taxation “shell game” and create common sense funding solutions that don’t weight down future generations with debt.  Small businesses are learning the shocking truth about the "margin tax" that was passed last year by the legislature under the guise of reforming the business tax.  How is this affecting your business?

Memorial Day:

Iron Men on Wooden Ships

I have a picture in my office of my grandfather “Papa Joe” with the crew of his Coast Guard boat just before they shipped out to participate in the D-Day Normandy Invasion.  These Coast Guard Wooden Patrol Boats were eighty-three feet long, made of wood and were manned by crews whose bravery earned them the nickname the Iron Men on Wooden Ships.  Here’s a link to a great site about the WPBs: http://uscg83footers.org/.  In the midst of the picnics and parties this weekend take a minute to remember those who defended our freedoms.  I’d also recommend listening to any tales they tell.  Papa Joe’s in the front row, second from the left and even though he’s been gone for years I can still hear him telling sea stories.  Have a Good Memorial Day Weekend and don’t forget to remember
